We’re pleased to learn of the opening of Olavine Spa, a new boutique day spa on Wailea Gateway Center. Dreamt up and created by veteran spa pro, Cecilia Hercik, best known for her work with Ritz-Carlton Hotel spas, the Aveda-Neill Corporation, The Grand Wailea, and most recently, Lumeria Maui Retreat. Olavine is a welcome addition to the area, with top-tier spa and salon services on the menu.
When it comes to treatments, Hercik is known for creatively blending local culture with timeless luxury. And Olavine Spa follows that tradition. A fusion of the Hawaiian word ola, meaning life and health, and the English word, olivine, a beautiful lava mineral said to have properties of calmness, peacefulness, and joy.
The day spa’s design, decor, and selection of treatments are inspired by these tiny, sparkling green lava pebbles that can be found onshore on the island of Hawai’i, amidst the beautiful blue Hawaiian waters. The term “olivine” is also known locally as Hawaiian diamonds or tears of Pele, the fire goddess. The spa’s logo takes the tear-shaped volcanic gems and forms the petals of a flower, blooming upward with life and promise. Hercik chose verdant green and vibrant blue as colors that represent the balance of land and sea.

A signature treatment that is sure to become a favorite is The Joyful Tears of Pele (waimaka o Pele). The 90-minute ($400 for one; $750 for two) island-inspired massage and body treatment is a four-hands’ body exfoliation and massage, beginning with an aromatic blend of island coconut, Hawaiian black lava salt, and green bamboo sea salt. Warm Hawaiian Pele oil is applied to the skin in long, soothing Lomi lomi strokes, encouraging muscle relaxation. After that, the warm oil is combined with lava rocks and olivine gem sachets, used for lymphatic drainage, and percussion massage techniques. Extra attention is focused on specific techniques to stretch and lengthen the back muscles.
Maui residents take note: Olavine Spa is offering exclusive Spa & Salon membership for locals.
