If there’s one cosmetics brand that’s synonymous with spa, it’s Jane Iredale. I’ve been a longtime fan since meeting Jane in the late 90s, shortly after she launched her eponymous line. Her products have seen me through some special moments, like the time I accepted ISPA’s distinguished Dedicated Contributor Award and had my makeup done backstage by one of her talented artists. At this year’s ISPA convention, I was delighted to reunite with Jane and to learn what’s new with the brand. Hint: A lot!
A few of the new and noteworthy products that caught my eye include the Hydration Spray in Lavender and the truly amazing PureBronze. l’ve been using both all summer, along with the Glow Time Pro BB Cream with SPF 25. If you’re like I am and keep makeup to a minimum, you’ll appreciate the products. At ISPA, I also met with the super-talented Shawn Towne, Global Director of Education and Artistry, who gave me some great pointers, so I asked him to share some of his summer makeup tips, as well as his Jane Iredale must-haves.
What are the top three mistakes that most women make when it comes to summer makeup?
When it comes to makeup, one of the most important rules everyone should follow is to start with a little and build from there. It’s always easier to add more makeup rather than remove it. Less is more! Another mistake made when it comes to summer makeup is not allowing your skincare products to set for at least 30 minutes. Your moisturizer, serums, and sunscreens need to soak into your skin in order to avoid pilling, and to ensure the products are doing their jobs. Lastly, always be sure to prep your face with a good primer to ensure your foundation and other makeup stays on all day, even throughout the summer heat.
What are your summer makeup must-haves?
Products with SPF protection and skincare-like benefits are always my go-to’s year round, but especially for the summer. Some of my favorites are the PurePressed® Base Mineral Foundation SPF 20/15, and LipDrink® Lip Balm SPF 15. Of course, Powder-Me SPF® 30 Dry Sunscreen is our highest SPF product. It also contains montmorillonite, a soothing clay that helps to relieve an existing sunburn. Never forget your SPF products in the summer! Along with our SPF products, we always want to include our antioxidant products that work hand in hand with SPF. One of my favorites is Pommisst Hydration Spray. It smells delicious and contains powerful antioxidants that work to address the kind of free radicals caused by UV rays.
It’s best to let your skincare products set for at least 30 minutes before applying any makeup.
In summer the heat can tend to increase our skin’s perspiration and oil production so matte products can really make a great difference. Our newest primer, Smooth Affair Mattifying Primer, is a great starting point. It controls shine without dehydrating skin and it has great ingredients that give antioxidant protection which is important in summer. Another favorite of mine is Dream Tint® Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. This formula, often referred to as our No Makeup Product, literally looks like fresh skin. Its sheer finish and natural coverage make it perfect for going to the gym, the grocery store or just for walking around the neighborhood. For hydration spray, Balance is an excellent choice for a more matte complexion. It has citrus extracts that lower oil production and green tea extract to address acne causing bacteria.
Any application tips for the products you recommend?
It’s important to remember that liquid products always are applied before powder-based products. When using the PurePressed® Base Mineral Foundation SPF 20/15, our Handi Brush is the perfect applicator for this product. It is also important to apply cream-based formulas before-hand, even products such as concealer and cream blush. If you’re looking to simplify your routine, HydroPure™ Tinted Serum with Hyaluronic Acid & CoQ10 provides you with light coverage, all while acting as a skin-boosting, hydrating serum, saving you a step in your getting-ready routine. This product is so easy to use, that the best application tool is your hands.
What’s your best overall beauty advice for achieving a healthy, summer glow?
While many people use the summer sun as a way to achieve a tan, no one should be skimping out on sun protection. SPF is a crucial step in our summer skincare regiment, as it’s not something that should be worn only to the beach! Stepping outside even for just a few minutes can subject the skin to damage. Look for broad-spectrum, mineral SPF products. With that said, we all like to have some color in the summer. Our new PureBronze Matte Bronzers are one of the most well-received bronzers we’ve ever launched. The colors look so natural, and the levels of depth are perfect for a wide range of skin tones. The shade Light is quite possibly the best bronzer color I’ve ever used in my entire 35-year makeup career.
