We’re celebrating The Beauty 100, a collaboration between InsidersGuidetoSpas.com and Spirituality & Health magazine that highlights the 100 best natural and organic personal-care products across 10 categories. Here, we shine the light on Italian Blood Orange Isla das Rocas Sea Salt Scrub from Red Flower—one of the award-winning “10 Best Body Scrubs.” We asked founder Yael Alkalay to tell us a little bit more about the product and the benefits of exfoliation.
Beautiful Benefits of Exfoliation
Yael first fell in love with the ceremonial and vigorous techniques of exfoliation while living in Japan, where she adhered to a three-times-a-week regime. The regime, which kept her skin smooth and radiant, also kept her energized. “Exfoliation is the most essential aspect of a complete bathing ritual,” says Yael, “Exfoliating removes toxins, firms skin, stimulates circulation, and leaves skin smooth and radiant. I see exfoliating as an integral part of my well-being.”
Spa Culture
“The act of exfoliation is an essential step of bathing in almost every culture. Whether by a camel mitt in Morocco, or a bamboo brush in Japan, or dry-brushing in Finland—the methods may differ but the process of renewal is the same,” shares Yael, who adds that scrubbing the skin stimulates circulation and increases the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the surface. She advises that you choose your scrub based on your skin type, seasonality, and texture preference for a radiant glow.

The Multi-Tasking Scrub
This sea salt scrub is a unique blend of algae, aloe-leaf gel, blood-orange essential oils, and the finest grain of hand-harvested sea salt. “It very gently exfoliates with a big moisture boost from aloe. The scrub doubles as a great soak, and is wonderful when added to a hot bath to leave skin deeply hydrated and softly scented,” says Yael.
Natural Ingredients that Work
Red Flower Isla das Rocas Sea Salt Scrub contains laminaria algae or “kelp seaweed,” that contains a full spectrum of proteins, vitamins, and amino acids that are essential in maintaining healthy skin. “Microscopic in size yet immense in benefits, the algae deeply hydrates and naturally enhances the skin’s moisture barrier to prevent drying,” explains Yael, “It also also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin for overall suppleness. The scrub is further enhanced with four additional unique algae varieties, its highly antioxidant activity helps repairs UV damage and fights free radicals to restore lasting firmness to the skin.”
