If what at first seemed a career pause is now looking like a complete reset—Michael Tompkins’ new Wednesday morning conversations may help. Tompkins, Partner at Hutchinson Consulting, has always been a man of action, so when the virus first hit, he immediately offered a 15-minute free consultation with Hutchinson Consulting’s executive recruiters to help. But guess what? Nobody signed up. It was too early. People didn’t realize then that we’re up against a complete crash of the system.
Three Thursdays ago, Tompkins tells me, Hutchinson Consulting had 30 contracted listings—three Saturdays ago, just 48 hours later—those 30 listings had dropped to three.
“Positions are coming back,” states Tompkins, “but not in the same way.” As of this writing, Hutchinson Consulting currently has 11 contracted listings. And the majority of the 27 positions that dropped out have asked Tompkins to get candidates together so when they reopen, Hutchinson has 10, 12 people to present right out of the gate. Now is the time to get ready for whatever is coming next.
The Thought Behind the Coffee
On March 24th, as spas were shutting down left and right, Tompkins participated as a panelist on a Green Spa Network webinar. In the midst of all of the chaos, he offered solid advice and useful tips on how to build your network and be resilient. Not five minutes after the webinar ended, Tompkins received about 25 emails from those in attendance, thanking him for his takeaways and tips.
“That’s when I realized I needed to reimagine what we can do to help people in the crisis,” shares Tompkins.
So, he did what any smart man would do: He spoke with the three savvy women who make up his marketing team, Carol Stratford, Kristine Huffman, and Julie Keller Callaghan, and his entire staff, and took a deep collective dive into all the things that happen during the recruiting process and how best to maximize a potential candidate’s opportunity to get hired. Enter Coffee with Coaches, a new weekly web series.
Beginning Wednesday April 8th at 10:00 am Pacific, and running through Wednesday May 13th, six topnotch executive recruiters from Hutchinson Consulting will take on a 30-minute session, speaking to a different topic (see schedule and links to register, below). At the end of each session, tips and takeaways will be posted to print out and use.
“I’m excited because this series is not about Hutchinson Consulting, it’s about you to maximize your potential to get the job that you’re seeking and to also be mentally and physically focused at the same time which gives you the best presentation for interview skills,” says Tompkins.
Learn from the Best
Each Coffee with Coaches session will be hosted by Tompkins and a Hutchinson Consulting Executive Recruiter. Best practices for getting a job, resume and interview skills, how to highlight your talents, and how to create a stronger Linkedin profile, among other things, will be shared.
“This series is about everyone, for everyone,” enthuses Tompkins who believes that the sessions will help speed up the process so that when rehiring occurs, candidates are set up and ready to go. “Beyond that, the important thing is that people don’t have to go to Hutchinson Consulting to use a recruiter to get a job, though we appreciate that. We want to provide useful information across the board and across industries so people will be able to learn knowledgeable skill sets that will enable them to get a job very fast.”
Jean Kolb kicks off the series on April 8th and will be discussing mental wellbeing and focus.
